To the Best Big Little Brother for National Siblings Day
So after seeing all the fantastic photos of everyone with their siblings, I figured I should mention the little man in my life I get to call my brother. My brother and I are 9 years apart, so pretty much the only time spent together was from 9 until 17, and then I was off to college never to really return home except for a couple of months for the Summer. For the short time that we were siblings under one roof, I had free reign over my very own live doll/puppy. I subjected my brother to many face paintings involving my mothers make-up and I dressed him in many of my dolls clothes. I mean they fit, so why shouldn't he wear them. I also made sure to scar my brother for life by telling him stories that has pretty much guaranteed his fear of women and diseases. Sometimes the information I was providing wasn't even a possible scenario for a man, but I was the older sister that he trusted and even after being told by his friends that I was making stuff up, he still believed me (although today he usually checks with Andrew).
I remember when he was still in his crib and I would ask my mother weekly when it was time for us to share a room. I was so excited to finally have a brother that I could talk to across the room from our beds, just like I would read about in all of my books. Granted there wasn't much we had in common, but it was a dream come true when we finally got our room and something I would ask for again in a heartbeat.
My brother has always been there to take care of me when I have been upset or slightly intoxicated. On one such occasion my brother woke me up to get ready for church, but unfortunately I was still drunk. I informed my brother there was no way I was getting up, so he rolled me into the one foot gap between my bed and dresser. Since I was feeling awesome, this uncomfortable position did not bother me in the least and so I slept for another hour. Upon his return he dragged me up to a seated position, brushed my hair, brushed my teeth and put on a pair of large sunglasses on my nose since I looked like shit. We then headed to breakfast with my mom and upon the waiters arrival to our table, my brother loudly announced that I was hung over and I needed to keep my glasses on. I was mortified, but to this day I will never forget it.
So, cheers to an amazing brother. I plan to always manipulate and trick you. I will always be a mother hen grating on your last nerve asking about your whereabouts, homework and your grades. I will always stalk your life and check out the girls you mention you might be interested in. I could not ask for a sweeter man to be there for me and I know any girl will be lucky to have you.
On my wedding day after Andrew danced with his mom, I asked my brother to share the "parent" dance, which we did to Avicii's Hey Brother
Hey brother, there’s an endless road to re-discover.
Hey sister, know the water's sweet but blood is thicker.
Oh, if the sky comes falling down for you,
There’s nothing in this world I wouldn’t do
